The Azoreans have a big emphasis on meat and fish in their diet. Initially I was nervous that I wouldn’t have many options and would have to eat the mushroom risotto every night we went out for a whole month. I was pleasantly surprised to find some great options. Rotas da Ilha Verde (Vegan & Vegetarian)
This comes up first in all of the searches. Rotas da Ilha Verde is a vegetarian restaurant with plenty of vegan options too. It is a gorgeous space with a warm and friendly atmosphere. If you visit Ponta Delgada at a busy time you must book in advance. They do two sittings for dinner, one at 7pm and one at 9pm.
The lunch option is particularly good value – just €10 for a mix of two mains and soup with excellent portions. I really recommend the hummus and if you’re going for dinner get the cheese fondue. I visited with two non vegetarian friends and they loved it too. A great affordable crowd pleaser and not a risotto in sight! Be sure to leave room for dessert!

Casa da Rosa (Vegan & Vegetarian)
Gorgeous restaurant in the centre of Ponta Delgada with amazing food! They do a brilliant vegetarian burger and vegan curry which are well worth trying. The staff are really friendly and drinks are priced well. This is another place we visited over and over again. They also do a fantastic brunch, with plenty of options for everybody.

Supléxio (Vegan & Vegetarian)
Supléxio is always busy so make sure to book ahead. Great casual dining spot with indoor and outdoor seating. It’s quite hipster and carries an extensive craft beer menu. There are great options for everyone and we all really enjoyed our meals. Again, very affordable and something different in Ponta Delgada. The cocktails are great too.
Avenida do Mar – Quiosque (Vegetarian)
Avenida do Mar is first and foremost a cocktail bar under a a permanent marquee. It’s a 10 – 15 minute walk outside the centre of Ponta Delgada with beautiful ocean views. Even though it’s described as a cocktail bar it’s a great restaurant and cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The prices are very reasonable and we visited quite often. There are pastas and salads for vegetarians and the staff don’t mind modifying items on the menu to suit different dietary needs. Wrap up warm as it can be windy!

Louvre Michaelense (Vegan & Vegetarian)
This is an incredible cafe with loads of character. It used to be an apothecary/pharmacy and still has the same cabinets and counters. They have a superb brunch with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I recommend the pancakes and acai bowl! It’s very reasonably priced and much better than similar spots in Dublin or London. Great coffee and cocktails too. It’s super busy but you must visit!

Outside Ponta Delgada
Restaurant Capitao (Lagoa) – This is a actually a fish restaurant. There are no vegetarian options on the menu but the chef will happily but something together for you. I had a gorgeous stew (vegetarian version of his famous fish stew). Great priced authentic Azorean dining.
O Poejo (Sete Cidades) is a gorgeous spot for lunch. The menu has options for everyone and the cakes and tea are a must! You can dine outdoors on their patio or inside by the fire. Highly recommend. The vegan salad is fab.
